Care instructions to ensure your EXPERT lasts a long time
07/22/2016

What all traditional clogs have in common is a wooden sole.
Since they're made of wood, many people might not know how to care for them.
This time, we will introduce how to care for the soles and leather of EXPERT clogs so you can enjoy them for a long time.
You don't need to prepare anything special!
Don't worry, readily available tools will be just fine.
The care method introduced this time is the most basic and relatively easy one. (Care for smooth leather: the outer leather)
Now, let me introduce the items used for care.

・Brush for shoes and leather care
【It's even more convenient to have several brushes of different sizes】
・Soft cloth
【2 pieces: flannel made of cotton, plain weave cotton cloth】
・Leather remover
【Dirt remover for smooth leather】
・Leather cream
【Nutritional cream for leather products, commercially available for cowhide smooth leather, emulsion type, colorless (neutral)】
These are the four items.
Let's explain the care process right away.
① Brush the surface of the leather upper to remove dust and dirt. The key is to be gentle and light so as not to scratch it.
(It is recommended to use a soft-bristled brush, such as one made of horsehair, with fine, soft bristles that won't damage the leather.)
② Brush the seam between the upper and the sole with a finer brush to remove any dust that has gotten into the gaps.
Then, lightly brush the side of the wooden sole along the grain of the wood.
③ Wipe the entire wooden sole with a damp cloth. Afterward, place it in a shaded, well-ventilated area to dry thoroughly. If you are concerned about moisture in the toe area, stuff it with newspaper to help absorb the moisture.
Since it's a wooden sole, use a cloth that has been thoroughly wrung out, and ensure it dries completely; otherwise, the wood may deform or mold may grow, causing damage.
④ Apply an appropriate amount of leather remover to a cloth (plain weave cotton cloth) and gently wipe the entire leather part.
⑤ Apply the leather cream, spreading it evenly over the entire surface.
It's convenient to use a penetrate brush (a small brush made of pig bristles, etc.), but if you don't have one, you can apply cream to your fingers and spread it over the entire leather surface by hand.
⑥ Brush the entire shoe thoroughly, spreading the cream evenly and removing any excess cream. At this stage, a considerable shine will appear.
(Brushes with slightly stiffer synthetic or pig bristles spread the cream better and produce a better shine. If not available, the brush used in step ② is fine.)
⑦ Finish by polishing with a cloth (cotton flannel) to remove any remaining cream that couldn't be removed by brushing.
As you polish, the luster will increase, the cream on the surface will be gone, maintaining good breathability, and making it harder for dirt to stick.
Your regular periodic care is complete following these seven steps.
